I don’t know about you but I am a chronic over packer. I have gotten better over the years, but still struggle when it comes to packing. Even if I'm heading out on a quick weekend getaway, I still feel the need to bring not only the basics, but variety of everything...just so I have options.

Here are some basic strategies to prevent over packing…and start packing like a pro!

  1. Always make a list, it can save you from serious over packing—and from forgetting necessities.
  2. Think about the number of outfits you need and subtract one.
  3. Roll, not fold…you’ll fit more.
  4. If you are flying, pack shoes in your carry-on. Packing them in a carry-on saves you room for more clothes and makes your checked bag less heavy.
  5. Pack outfits that can be mixed and matched instead of completely separate ensembles.
  6. Check the weather and be realistic in terms of what you’re going to wear.
  7. Don’t pack a lot of shoes—try to coordinate multiple outfits that match the same shoes so you only have to pack one or two pairs.
  8. Travel with samples you get from department stores. Save tester perfumes, foundations, eye creams, everything.
  9. Pack liquid toiletries in zip lock bags to prevent leakage.
  10. Use old contact cases to store liquid makeup. The caps prevent any spillage and on any weekend-to-weeklong trip, you will only need about an ounce of foundation anyway.
  11. Don’t bring your laptop unless you absolutely have to. Most of us have smartphones or tablets, which take up less space and are way less heavy.
  12. Bring an empty carry-on-sized bag in your checked luggage to bring back all your goodies that you purchase while on vacation!
